These are the terms on which we provide our services to you. They form a contract between you and OtherSyde Ltd, and by booking, subscribing or otherwise using our services you agree to them. We've tried to write them in plain English. If anything's unclear, email us at hello@othersyde.co.uk and we'll explain.
These terms work alongside our Privacy Policy, which explains what we do with your personal data. The two documents do different jobs — this one governs your relationship with us; the privacy policy covers how we handle your information.
If you don't want to read the whole thing, this is what matters most:
The Artyst is the trading name of OtherSyde Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 11126270). Our registered office is at 42 Woodlark Road, Cambridge CB3 0HS, and we operate from 54–56 Chesterton Road, Cambridge CB4 1EN.
OtherSyde Ltd is also the operating entity behind:
These terms apply to all of these together. Where a specific service has additional terms — for example, particular conditions for a private hire — we'll make those clear at the point of booking and they'll sit alongside this document.
To contact us:
Depending on how you interact with us, you might be:
The terms that apply depend on what you're doing. Sections 5–7 cover the main categories.
For some of our services — Invysible College enrolment, club membership, online bookings — you have an account or a member record with us.
You're responsible for keeping your account details accurate and your login secure. If someone else uses your account without your permission, contact us as soon as you realise.
We use your email address as your primary identifier across our services. If you change your email and want us to update our records, get in touch.
When you buy a ticket for an event, you're entering a contract with us to attend that event at the time, date and location specified. Some events include extras (a complimentary drink on arrival, for instance) — these are detailed on the event page at point of booking.
Cancellation by you: Event tickets are generally non-refundable. If you can't attend, you can:
Cancellation by us: Sometimes events have to be cancelled or rescheduled — the speaker falls ill, the music act gets stuck on a motorway, the world has a moment. If that happens, we'll let you know as soon as we can and either offer a full refund, a rescheduled ticket, or a credit. Your choice.
Tour bookings can be cancelled for a full refund up to 48 hours before the tour starts. After that, the tour is non-refundable, though you may transfer your booking to another person.
Tours go ahead in most weather. We will only cancel for safety reasons (severe weather, a guide unavailable with no replacement). If we cancel, you get a full refund or a rescheduled date — your choice.
Tours involve walking — typically 2 to 4 hours, depending on the tour, with breaks. We do our best to be accessible but Cambridge's streets are not always cooperative. If you have specific access needs, email bookings@alcademy.co.uk before booking so we can advise honestly.
Tables held for you are released 15 minutes after your booked time if you haven't arrived or been in touch. For party bookings above 6 people, we may take a deposit that's redeemable against your bill on the night.
The Arty Club and CURE Club are monthly subscriptions, currently £5/month each, or £8/month for both. Memberships are personal and not transferable.
Current member benefits are listed on the membership signup page and in your welcome email. We may add benefits over time. We won't remove material benefits without giving members at least 30 days' notice by email.
Headline benefits at the time of writing:
Memberships renew automatically each month on the date you signed up. We collect the monthly fee from the payment method you provided at signup. If a payment fails, we'll try a few more times over the following days; if it still doesn't go through, your membership will lapse and you'll lose access to member benefits until you sign up again.
You can cancel at any time through the Manage your membership link in your welcome email (which takes you to a self-service portal hosted by Stripe).
Cancellation takes effect immediately. You'll lose access to member benefits as soon as you cancel.
We don't pro-rata refund the remainder of the month you've already paid for. If you cancel on the 5th of the month, your access ends on the 5th of the month, and the payment you made on the 1st is not refunded for the unused days. If you think your circumstances warrant an exception — a billing error, a sudden change in personal circumstances, anything reasonable — email us and we'll consider it fairly.
Nothing in this section affects your rights under UK consumer law to a refund where one is legally required.
You can switch from Arty Club to CURE Club, or to Both Clubs (and so on), through the same self-service portal. Switches take effect at your next billing date, with proration applied to the difference if you're upgrading.
We won't change the price of a membership without giving you at least 30 days' notice by email. If we increase the price and you don't want to continue at the new rate, you can cancel before the change takes effect.
Invysible College enrolment is currently free. Enrolment is by invitation, with codes distributed by us and by current members.
By enrolling, you agree to:
We may withdraw enrolment for breach of these terms, behaviour that's harmful to other members or to us, or persistent inactivity (after at least one warning by email).
We take payments through Stripe. Stripe handles your card details directly — we don't see them, store them, or have access to them. Our use of Stripe is covered in our Privacy Policy Section 5.
All prices are in pounds sterling (GBP) and include VAT where applicable.
For online payments, your card statement may show "OTHERSYDE LTD" or "THE ARTYST" depending on the channel.
These apply equally at the venue and in our digital spaces:
We reserve the right to refuse service or remove access for any breach of these rules. We don't do this lightly, but we will do it when we need to.
If you're hiring the Artyst to run your own event:
We may refuse to host events whose content, character or expected audience doesn't fit the venue's identity or licence terms. We're a cultural and educational venue. Some things are great fits; some aren't. We'll be honest with you upfront.
Club members can apply to use the venue for their own events under house terms. The current arrangement (subject to change with notice):
To apply for a member booking, email events@theartyst.co.uk with the date, what you'd like to do, and how many people you expect.
Everything on our websites, in our printed material, and in our spaces — text, images, designs, the Invysible College's curriculum and structure — is owned by OtherSyde Ltd or licensed to us. You can read it, share links to it, and quote reasonable extracts with attribution. You can't copy substantial portions or use our material commercially without our written permission.
The Syd Barrett-related photography and content exhibited at the venue is presented with the cooperation of the Barrett estate and the photographers concerned. It is not licensed for reproduction.
When you submit content to us — a signup message, a job application, a comment in a Porter conversation, an event proposal — you keep ownership of what you write. You give us a non-exclusive licence to use it for the purpose you submitted it (assessing your application, operating the system, considering your event).
If you submit a public-facing contribution — an event you've programmed, a piece displayed at the venue — we'll agree separately how the content is credited and used.
Don't submit anything that's illegal, infringes someone else's rights, or that you wouldn't be comfortable seeing attributed back to you. We may decline or remove submissions that breach these terms.
We promise to provide our services with reasonable care and skill, in line with what you'd reasonably expect from a cultural venue and educational programme of our kind.
We don't promise that:
Nothing in this section limits our responsibility to provide services with reasonable care and skill as required by the Consumer Rights Act 2015, or to refund or repair where the law requires it.
Sometimes things happen that no one can plan for — illness, severe weather, transport strikes, utility outages, building issues, supplier failures, public health restrictions, acts of God. Where these affect our ability to provide a service, we'll do what's reasonable to either reschedule, refund, or provide an alternative. We won't be liable for losses that result from events genuinely outside our control.
We're a small venue. We're responsible for our own conduct — for providing services properly, for not being negligent, for handling your data with care. We're not responsible for:
Nothing in this section excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for any other liability that cannot be excluded under UK law.
We may suspend or terminate your access to our services if you breach these terms in a serious or persistent way. We'll usually warn you first unless the situation makes that inappropriate.
You can stop using our services at any time. Cancellation of memberships is covered in Section 6.3. Where you've paid for something specific (a ticket, a hire), the relevant cancellation policy applies.
We may update these terms from time to time — when we add a service, change a process, or when the law changes. When we make material changes, we'll update the "last updated" date at the top and, where appropriate, notify subscribers and members by email.
The current version is always the one at theartyst.co.uk/terms. By continuing to use our services after a change, you accept the updated terms.
These terms are governed by English law. Any dispute that can't be resolved informally is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts.
If you have a complaint, please come to us first. We'd rather sort things out than have you stuck. Email matthew@othersyde.co.uk and we'll respond within five working days.
If your complaint relates to how we've handled your personal data, you can also contact the UK Information Commissioner's Office — details are in our Privacy Policy Section 8.
For anything to do with these terms:
If you've read this far — thank you. We've tried to be straight with you about what we do and what we expect. If anything's unclear or unfair, tell us.
